Jarad Giddens, a city council member, gave the American Legion Post the first check for the city's $680 recent revenue from recycling aluminium cans. The American Legion Post uses its money from recycling aluminium cans to cover operating costs and provide emergency assistance to the community's veterans and their families. The Nixa Price Cutter parking lot contains a recycling bin specifically for Post 434's aluminium cans, formerly the post's primary source of income.
"We were blown away by the generosity of the city to donate this money to the post in an ongoing manner. A few years ago, we had to take donations from our members just to keep the doors open and pay our bills, but now we don't have to worry about being able to pay the bills because the city is providing this. It's truly an amazing gift and it shows the city really cares about its veterans," said Post Commander Nick Gerdes.
To support the local veterans, Nixa citizens are urged to bring their recyclable aluminium cans to the Nixa Recycling Center. The American Legion Post 434 in Nixa, which supports neighbourhood veterans of the armed forces, will get all proceeds from the recycling of aluminium cans, according to a commitment made by the city of Nixa.
Residents in Nixa must send their aluminium cans to the Nixa Recycle Center if they want the proceeds to benefit the local American Legion Post. Since the contents of curbside carts are not transported to the Nixa Recycling Center, curbside recycling will not be a part of this initiative.
"The market rate for recycled aluminum cans fluctuates, but every time the bins at the Nixa Recycle Center are full, we'll exchange them for cash and send that money on to the American Legion. It's a way we can help them raise money for a good cause and make sure we're not competing with them for those aluminum cans," said Giddens.
