Vedanta, a subsidiary of Vedanta Resources and also India’s largest producer of aluminium has cropped up as the highest bidder for the Radhikapur West coal block, located in Angul district, Odisha. The coal is just at a distance of about 190 km from Vedanta’s Jharsuguda Aluminium Smelter.
The coal block is ideally fit for the Jharsuguda aluminium smelter considering its logistical location and annual capacity. The total reserves of the mine remain at 312 million, while the extraction capacity approval per annum stands at 6 million tonnes.
The mine once becomes operation will deliver fuel security, enhance power availability and further strengthen the Vedanta's Aluminium and Power operations and performance.
The announcement was made on 30th December’20 post the market hours. The smelter in Jharsuguda is one of the world's largest single-location aluminium smelters outside China.
