AlCircle launches new report - Aluminium Industry Recap 2020

As the year 2020 comes to an end, AlCircle recapitulates the year in its new report Aluminium Industry Recap 2020. The report compiles the new major innovations, investments, expansions, and policy changes that either shaped or disrupted the global aluminium industry value chain in 2020.

The primary aim of the report is to touch upon the significant developments of this year vertical wise, in a bid to analyse how every vertical influenced each other’s growth or counter-growth. Moreover, the developments are not only interpreted chronologically but analytically to help the readers have a critical understanding of the movement of aluminium value chain and how that turned around the market.

Aluminium Industry Recap 2020

Overall, 2020 was a year of mayhem for the aluminium industry caused by the most unprecedented COVID19 pandemic. The first half of the year experienced a steady drop in primary aluminium prices due to the slowdown in demand across various industrial sectors such as the automobile, aerospace, and construction. According to a data showed by the Norwegian aluminium producer Norsk Hydro, world primary aluminium consumption fell 9.41 per cent year-on-year in H1 2020 from 32.237 million tonnes to 29.203 million tonnes.

Downturn in primary aluminium consumption led to market surplus and plunging prices until the demand started recovering in H2. The benchmark price of aluminium on the London Metal Exchange started the year at US$ 1772 per tonne but edged lower through the first half of 2020 to US$ 1602 per tonne.

Further upstream, alumina price, however, showed a steady trend ranging between US$ 278.50 per tonne and US$ 302 per tonne, except an intermittent downfall in April to US$ 225 per tonne. Fair balance between production and consumption buoyed alumina’s steady price trend. Bauxite CIF price ranged between US$ 43 per tonne and US$ 41 per tonne throughout the year.

The COVID-19 pandemic developed a profound impact on the downstream aluminium sector as operational activities were curtailed across many industries. The 100 years old automotive supplier company, Aluminium Rheinfelden, suffered a major blow as the vehicle productions remained on pause. The world leader in aluminium rolling and recycling, Novelis Inc., reported a net loss of $ 61 million from continuing operations in the first-quarter FY2021 ended on June 30.

The COVID19 pandemic affected the aviation industry in the end-user sector, while electric vehicles market saw an improvement in 2020 sales. The Electric vehicle sales in India grew by 20 per cent over the year to 156,000 units in FY20. In China, sales in October climbed 115.4 per cent year on year to 133,000 units.

Aluminium packaging recycling rates improved across the globe, surpassing its 2020 targets by more than 5 per cent, according to data released by the Environment Agency.
