Alumina production in North America grows by 6% M-o-M in June 2020; South America’s output lowers by 4%

In June 2020, the alumina production (including metallurgical-grade alumina) in North America stood at 223,000 tonnes, up by 6.19 per cent month-on-month from 210,000 tonnes, according to the data released by the International Aluminium Institute. However, on a year-on-year basis, the production in June stood down by 6.30 per cent from 238,000 tonnes.

As per the IAI data, the alumina production in North America in Q2 2020 declined quarter-on-quarter by 3.72 per cent from 672,000 tonnes to 647,000 tonnes, and over the year by 9.76 per cent from 717,000 tonnes.

In the first half of the year, the accumulative production of alumina in North America totalled 1.32 million tonnes compared to 1.42 million tonnes during the same period last year. So, the total output in H1 2020 edged lower by 7.04 per cent year-on-year.

In South America, on the other hand, the alumina production (including metallurgical-grade) in June recorded a month-on-month decline of 4.12 per cent from 1.02 million tonnes to 978,000 tonnes, while year-on-year stood up by 6.07 per cent from 922,000 tonnes, found the IAI data.

Energy Consumption in Aluminium Smelting

In the second quarter of 2020, South America produced 3.01 million tonnes of alumina, down by 2.27 per cent from 3.08 million tonnes in Q1 2020. However, on a year-on-year calculation, the alumina output in South America in Q2 2020 edged higher by 22.86 per cent from 2.45 million tonnes, according to IAI.

In the first half of the year, the total production of alumina in South America amounted to 6.1 million tonnes, registering a plunge of 27.1 per cent from 4.8 million tonnes.
