Seng Casin Electronics exporting pure aluminium to China enters local beverage can market

A Cambodian recycling company, Seng Casin Electronics, has begun locally producing pure aluminium from aluminium scrap to be readily exported to China. The first of its kind in Cambodia, the company also wishes to venture out with its aluminium products into the domestic industrial sector.

Seng Casin Electronics has planned to supply local beverage companies with aluminium cans made with recycled aluminium from its facility in Takeo province. The CEO of the company, Sun Bunheng, claimed that the factory presently exports the total volume of its extracted pure aluminium.

“We are gearing up to produce drink cans for local breweries and beverage companies and also plan to manufacture aluminium power lines,” Bunheng explained.

The CEO also added: “There are Chinese and South Korean clients who are interested in power lines and cables, as well as several local electrical factories. The market for aluminium products is global, and we see no reason why Cambodia shouldn’t compete in it.”

To give a context to his argument, he went on to talk about the 20,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap arriving in Vietnam each month and passing through the Cambodian-Vietnamese border gate in Kratie province’s Snuol district.

Bunheng made it apparent: “The Vietnamese process the scarp into cans or cables and then sell them to China, or even back to us. Once we saw this opportunity, we knew we had to be involved. Of course, the fact that we are contributing to recycling and improving the environment is also a motivating factor.”

Seng Casin Electronics inaugurated its factory in Takeo province’s Tram Kak district the previous year, appointing over 500 to 2,000 heads according to the unit’s requirements and its production rate.

The factory has imported Chinese smelters and installed them to bring peripheral growth to the company, with experts from China guiding them at every step.

Bunheng asserted: “Cambodia produces – and consumes – a lot of beer, juice and energy drinks, all of which are sold in aluminium cans, but we previously had no way of recycling those cans. All of our scraps were heading to neighbouring countries. Now, we expect to grow our exports of finished products to China, Singapore and Vietnam.”

The Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, Cham Prasidh, made a statement on March 26 during the first National Forum on “Science, Technology and Innovation” in Cambodia.

He said: “Developing innovation throughout Cambodia is a key tenant of the ministry’s planning. Through the enhancement of science and technology, in conjunction with ongoing research and development, we believe Cambodian enterprises can become competitive, regionally as well as globally.”

“Creating employment opportunities and adding value to products are our highest priorities. Seng Casin’s aluminium plant is an excellent example of these priorities,” Cham Prasidh concluded.
