ASAŞ Alüminyum secures two high-end aluminium extrusion lines from Germany’s SMS Group

ASAŞ Alüminyum from Turkey has purchased two new aluminium extrusion lines from SMS Group to manufacture aluminium profile sizes that are yet to be found in Europe. ASAŞ has been dependent on the latter's extrusion technology for a long time now, and these new lines are 150 MN extrusion and a tube array, well accompanied by a 45 MN HybrEx® line.

ASAŞ Alüminyum pays extra attention to the quality of products shipped from its factory, along with showing utmost importance to plant efficiency and stress-free operations, all of which require an incredible amount of technological prowess.

ASAŞ already have been manufacturing with the help of four extrusion lines from SMS, a single-stand aluminium cold rolling mill and a colour coating line (CCL). But this 150 MN extrusion press can be regarded as Europe's largest extrusion line and will introduce new avenues for ASAŞ along the global aluminium network for extra-large extrusion profiles.

These aluminium profiles are generally used in making railway components or for the creation of railway carriages. The SMS Group has the required knowledge for supplying units with such extraordinary applications and also has showcased its superiority many times in accomplishing past projects.

SMS will supply both these extrusion lines from a single outlet. The 150 MN line has been upgraded with modern factory components that can develop finish-sawn profiles up to the length of 30 metres.

The package consists of induction furnaces from IAS, a sister concern of SMS Group, a 150 MN tube and extrusion press built according to the latest SMS specifications and a quench & complete handling equipment by OMAV, another SMS group subsidiary.

The new lines will be able to manufacture 18-inch to 24-inch aluminium billets and massive profile sizes with a maximum width of 900 millimetres and a maximum height of 450 millimetres.

Even the tubes produced can be configured with the required wall thickness.

ASAŞ is on a quest to expand its production capacity to cope with the fast-growing automotive market, and this latest 45 MN HybrEx® extrusion line will ultimately do so with the company's existing HybrEx® line purchased in 2021.

This new line comes upgraded with a gas-fired billet furnace and an induction furnace, a 45 MN HybrEx® extrusion press with an energy-efficient hybrid drive system, and the latest quench and runout system with profile stretcher and precise in-line profile cutting.

Future of Aluminium in Transportation Sector

In comparison to conventional extrusion presses, the hybrid drive technology curtails energy usage by 30 per cent to 50 per cent. The extrusion line can easily manufacture aluminium profiles with a maximum width of 400 millimetres and a height reaching 280 millimetres.

These plants will be fully optimised by 2025. The lightweight but rigid aluminium profiles are usually preferred in making automotive components such as the bumper or battery casings.
