CANPACK S.A. to materialize US$140 million plant in Poços de Caldas sufficing aluminium can demand in Brazil

CANPACK S.A. has declared that it will enhance its aluminium beverage can production capacity with the introduction of a new manufacturing unit in Poços de Caldas, a municipality under the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The CANPACK authority, alongside economic development leaders and state plus local officials together, announced the new facility after its design was vetted and a BRL 710 million (US$140 million) investment sanctioned.

With economic development funding arranged by the state and local governments, this latest facility portrays CANPACK’s immense dedication to serving the Brazilian packaging sector. The above announcement was a successor to CANPACK’s BRL 360 million (US$70 million) investment for an aluminium beverage can ends production line in Manaus, Amazonas. If calculated jointly, the investments amount up to BRL 1 billion.

The Poços de Caldas facility will start getting its shape from the fourth quarter of 2022, with operations beginning in 2024, during the primary quarter of the year. The estimated capacity of the newfound plant will be around 1.3 billion cans per year, and it will increase the production rate to meet the demand of Brazilian consumers. The new plant will also bring hope to the area in the form of 140 open job positions for highly-qualified people.

The Group Chief Operations Officer, Andre Balbi, clarified: “We are dedicated to the Brazilian packaging industry and have been strengthening our presence in this dynamic market since the acquisition of Cia Metalic in December 2016,” saying the above, he added, “This new investment, together with our other, up-to-date investments in Brazil, will give us a better position to serve our customers’ growing needs for beverage cans and ends not only in Brazil, but in the South American region.”

Paula Dias, the General Director of CANPACK Brazil, illuminated the listeners by saying: “We are excited and proud to bring to the region the state-of-the-art greenfield manufacturing facility producing aluminium beverage cans, an infinitely recyclable packaging. We chose to expand in Poços de Caldas because of its strong economy and very business-friendly environment. This is because we have also attracted several beverage companies to Minas Gerais. This kind of investment moves the entire production chain and contributes to the jobs generation within the state.”

According to sources, the Brazilian beverage market is the recorded 3rd largest aluminium beverage can market in the world, with its tentacles providing 33.4 billion can sales in 2021, which had a 5.2 per cent boost in comparison to the previous year, flaunting the highest recycling rate in the world with 98.7 per cent.
