Aluminium Formwork: A game-changing technology for residential construction

On 29th July 2022, Larsen & Toubro, the Indian multinational conglomerate company with business interests in engineering and construction, stated that it had developed a 12-storey residential tower with 96 apartments in just 96 days by applying its precast extensive concrete panel technique for ultra-rapid construction of public housing.

Aluminium Formwork: A game-changing technology for residential construction

Located in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, the tower is one of approximately 23,432 houses constructed by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO).

India's premier infrastructure developer Larsen & Toubro said, "L&T's 'Mission 96' project was achieved using precast technology that is touted as the future of construction of residential towers for rapid mechanized construction with superior quality based on controlled manufacturing in a factory environment."

Aluminium formwork is a construction technique for forming the cast-in-place concrete structure of the building. In addition to scheduling and controlling other construction trends, it facilitates the placement of steel reinforcement, concrete, and electrical and mechanical conduits.

The benefits of Aluminium Formwork are that it is quick to set up, precise, and sturdy. The average cost of using aluminium formwork is low since it can be reused repeatedly. As a result of the integral extrusion forming process, this formwork system is highly economical. These types of formwork are convenient and practical to construct.

Approximately 1,985 precast elements of the superstructure were produced and installed along with architectural finishes and MEP works on a 64,000 sqft site.

The leading architectural design consultancy firm of India, Architect Hafeez Contractor, said, "L&T that pioneered aluminium formwork construction in the country and changed the face of the residential sector has been instrumental in driving precast technology; to achieve material sustainability and speedy construction further."

He further added, "The Company's focus on prefabricated pre-finished volumetric construction would help it to meet the growing demand for housing in India."

The World of Aluminium Extrusion

M.V. Satish, the whole-time Director & Senior Executive Vice President (Buildings) at L&T, said, "At buildings & factories, we have always sought ways and means to speed up the pace of construction, and this project is another successful effort to reduce construction cycle time dramatically."

L&T created a particular unit named B&F Fast to focus on developing methods and deploying technology to build quickly and at scale. It recently completed DRDO's 7-storey, state-of-the-art Flight Control System Integration Centre in 45 days.
