World alumina monthly production records a 3% rise to 11.728 Mt, but daily output shrinks to 378,300 tonnes

According to the International Aluminium Institute (IAI), world alumina production in May 2022 recorded a month-on-month rise of 3.09 per cent to 11.728 million tonnes (including 10.983 million tonnes of metallurgical-grade alumina), following almost a restraint in the previous month. In April, the output was 11.376 million tonnes, compared to 11.373 million tonnes in March 2022.

However, on a year-on-year basis, world alumina output during May reflected a downfall of 3.08 per cent from 12.101 million tonnes, found IAI data.

In the first five months of the year, world alumina production totalled 56.222 million tonnes, down by 2.47 per cent from 57.647 million tonnes.

Daily average production of alumina in May 2022 stood at 378,300 tonnes, which registered a dip of 0.24 per cent M-o-M from 379,200 tonnes despite an increase in monthly output. On a yearly basis, daily output in the same month fell by 3.09 per cent from 390,400 tonnes, showed IAI.

China, the highest alumina producer in the world, churned out 6.6 million tonnes in May 2022, which recorded a month-on-month jump of 3.29 per cent from 6.390 million tonnes. On a yearly basis, the output stood 0.61 per cent higher than 6.560 million tonnes.

From January to May 2022, China produced 30.790 million tonnes of alumina in total, down by 1.35 per cent from 31.210 million tonnes during the same period last year.

In the Oceania region, alumina production during May amounted to 1.729 million tonnes, registering a rise of 3.53 per cent from 1.670 million tonnes in April but a decline of 7.19 per cent from 1.863 million tonnes in May 2021. During January-May, total alumina production in Oceania stood at 8.593 million tonnes versus 8.766 million tonnes a year ago.
