World alumina production edges 4.33% lower to 11.170 million tonnes in September 2021: IAI

According to the International Aluminium Institute, world alumina production in September 2021 stood at 11.170 million tonnes (including both metallurgical and chemical), which was down by 4.33 per cent from 11.675 million tonnes in August. In July, the output was 11.669 million tonnes, meaning alumina production across the world in August remained essentially unchanged month-on-month.

On a year-on-year calculation, world alumina production in September stood 3.30 per cent higher than 10.813 million tonnes.

In Q3 2021, world alumina production came in at 34.514 million tonnes, down by 2.64 per cent from 35.450 million tonnes in Q2 2021 but up by 3.30 per cent from 33.412 million tonnes in Q3 2020.

From January to September 2021, world alumina production totalled 103.907 million tonnes, up by 5.42 per cent from 98.565 million tonnes during the same period last year.

In China, estimated alumina production during September 2021 stood at 6.184 million tonnes, down by 3.22 per cent from 6.390 million tonnes a month ago. Output in Q3 amounted to 18.854 million tonnes, down by 2.66 per cent from 19.370 million tonnes in Q2 2021. In total months of 2021, China produced 56.574 million tonnes of alumina.

Outlook for the Indian Aluminium Industry

In the Oceania region, alumina production during September 2021 amounted to 1.701 million tonnes, 3.95 per cent less than 1.771 million tonnes in August. During Q3, alumina production in Oceania came in at 5.262 million tonnes as compared to 5.393 million tonnes in Q2. In nine months, alumina output in Oceania was recorded at 15.794 million tonnes, up by 0.56 per cent from 15.706 million tonnes during the corresponding period last year.
