Aluminium Downstream Weekly Recap: Novelis accomplishes $150 million Aluminum Rolling and Recycling expansion project in Brazil; AWB Aluminiumwerk Berlin GmbH joins ASI as new Production and Transformation member
The aluminium downstream segment is considered as the major player of the global aluminium industry, however, this week it remained modest from the other segments of the value chain eventually. The Aditya Birla Group-owned Novelis Inc. declared the conclusion of its $150 million investment to enlarge both rolling and recycling capacity at its Pindamonhangaba plant in Brazil by 100 kilotonnes each. On the other part of the world, in Germany, AWB Aluminiumwerk Berlin GmbH joined as ASI’s 185th Production and Transformation member.
Vedanta Limited has sharply reduced its aluminium product prices with effect from Tuesday, August 10, in tandem with the plunge in LME aluminium benchmark price on August 9. Vedanta’s aluminium wire rod price has seen a cut of INR 5,500 per tonne or 2.30 per cent on Tuesday and standing at INR 228,000-235,500 per tonne, compared with INR 233,500-241,000 per tonne on August 7.

Hindalco Industries Limited has cut its aluminium products price by INR 5,500 per tonne. With effect from Tuesday, 10 August 2021, aluminium billets and wire rods prices have come in at INR 227,100 per tonne and INR 231,100 per tonne. This is down by more than 2% from INR 232,600 per tonne and INR 236,600 per tonne on August 7.

Vedanta Limited has increased its aluminium product prices on August 11, a day after it significantly reduced the prices on August 10. The latest hike has brought the company’s aluminium billet price to INR 231,500 per tonne, up by INR 3,000 per tonne from INR 228,500 per tonne.

On 12th August 2021, the world leader in aluminium rolling and recycling, Novelis Inc. announced the completion of its $150 million investment to enlarge both rolling and recycling capacity at its Pindamonhangaba plant in Brazil by 100 kilotonnes each. The annual production capacity at this rolling and recycling complex stands as the largest in South America and is expected to further increase to approximately 680 kilotonnes for aluminium sheets and 490 kilotonnes for recycling.
Hindalco Industries Limited has hiked its aluminium products price after cutting the price of the same products yesterday. With effect from Wednesday, 11 August 2021, aluminium billets and wire rods prices have come in at INR 230,100 per tonne and INR 234,100 per tonne, a growth of INR 3,000 per tonne from INR 227,100 per tonne and INR 231,100 per tonne on August 10.

According to the US Geological Survey data, the United States aluminium crude metals and alloys imports from United Arab Emirates (UAE) rose 6.15 per cent or 1,900 tonnes month-on-month to 32,800 tonnes in May 2021. In April, the US imports stood at 30,900 tonnes, down by 0.96 per cent from 31,200 tonnes in the previous month.
The eastern European nation, Ukraine, is also the second-largest country in Europe after Russia has imported 2713 tonnes of aluminium powder and flakes during 2018-20. The expenditure accounted for the import was $13.73 million. Ukraine imported 663 tonnes of aluminium powder and flakes in 2018. The expenditure towards the import remained at $3.38 million, whereas, in 2019, the import reflected growth by 65.61%, as the import volume escalated to 1098 tonnes and the expenditure inflated to $6.03 million.
Shanghai Metals Market found that the aluminium wire and cable sector’s operating rate stood at 41.12 per cent in July 2021, reflecting a drop of 0.2 percentage points from June. But on a year-on-year calculation, it edged 0.4 percentage points higher. The month-on-month decrease in operating rate in July could be attributed to the high aluminium price and temperature. The SMM average monthly spot aluminium price in east China stood at RMB 19,023 per tonne, up by RMB 414 per tonne from June.
According to the Shanghai Metals Market, aluminium billet inventories in China increased by 14,400 tonnes on Thursday, August 12, across the five major consumption areas, as was estimated in the previous week. SMM data found the inventories stood at 117,600 tonnes this week compared to 103,200 tonnes on August 5.
The island in the North Atlantic, Ireland recorded 35,173 tonnes of aluminium structures during 2018-20 and the expenditure occurred for the import of the metal structures accounted for $148.75 million. In 2018, the nation recorded 15,001 tonnes of aluminium structures and the expenditure occurred for the import was $28.96 million, whereas, in 2019, the import unfolded a significant downfall by 21.90%, as the import volume dropped to 11,715 tonnes, while the expenditure rose to $69.66 million.
