In April 2021, world alumina production stood at 11.598 million tonnes, reflecting a month-on-month downfall of 2.63 per cent, found the International Aluminium Institute's data. In the first four months of the year, alumina production across the world totalled 45.856 million tonnes – 5.12 per cent higher than 43.623 million tonnes during the same period last year.

According to the latest data shown by the US Geological Survey, the United States imported 416,000 tonnes of alumina in the first quarter of 2021. This represented a quarter-on-quarter hike of 102,000 tonnes. On a year-on-year calculation, alumina imports by the US in Q1 2021 stood 59,000 tonnes or 16.53 per cent higher than 357,000 tonnes.

In West Europe, alumina production in April 2021 stood at 440,000 tonnes, reflecting a month-on-month decline of 51,000 tonnes or 10.39 per cent,

Alumina production in East & Central Europe, on the other hand, stood slightly higher at 399,000 tonnes in April 2021 compared to 398,000 tonnes in March.

Hydro signed a BRL 2.2 million agreement with the University of São Paulo to explore uses for bauxite residue in civil construction. The waste will be used in the production of cement floors that prove to be advantageous from the environmental point of view and throughout their life cycle.

South America’s alumina production stood at 1.064 million tonnes in April 2021, 5.24% higher than the same period last year, according to the latest data showed by the International Aluminium Institute (IAI). In January-April 2021, alumina production in North America was 4.220 million tonnes as against as 4.087 million tonnes.
