US aluminium scrap exports reflect a 5% rise YoY to 153,000t in Jan 2021 but exports to India decline 17% to 24,100 tonnes

The United States aluminium scrap exports started the year in January 2021 with a month-on-month decline of 3,000 tonnes or 1.92 per cent. From 156,000 tonnes in December 2020, the exports decreased to 153,000 tonnes in January 2021. But nevertheless, on a year-on-year basis, the US aluminium scrap exports in January this year reflected a hike of 7,000 tonnes or 4.79 per cent from 146,000 tonnes.

To India, the second-largest aluminium scrap export destination for US after Malaysia, the United States exported 24,100 tonnes in January 2021, down by 6,500 tonnes or 21.24 per cent from 30,600 tonnes in December 2020.

On a year-on-year calculation, the US aluminium scrap exports to India in January 2021 also stood down by 4,800 tonnes or 16.61 per cent from 28,900 tonnes, despite a hike in the US total scrap exports.

In the entire year of 2020, the United States aluminium scrap exports totalled 1.850 million tonnes – 0.54 per cent less than 1.860 million tonnes in 2019. The US aluminium scrap exports to India in 2020 amounted to 307,000 tonnes, which, however, reflected a year-on-year hike of 13.29 per cent from 271,000 tonnes.

 The United States total aluminium exports (including aluminium crude metal and alloys and aluminium flat rolled products) in January 2021 stood at 224,000 tonnes, flat month-on-month but down by 3.03 per cent year-on-year from 231,000 tonnes.
