South America’s top three Primary Aluminium producers

The primary aluminium producing nations of South America are Brazil, Argentina, and Venezuela. Once Venezuela used to lead the primary aluminium industries in South America like that of Argentina nowadays, besides from Brazilian giants with greater production rule.

Later on, Venezuela faded away from the industry due to its non-commercial focus on the market and high cost of power. However, in this article we will majorly focus on the top three primary aluminium producers of South America:

  • Aluar Aluminio Argentino (Argentina)
  • Companhia Brasileira de Aluminio (Brazil)
  • Albras Alumínio Brasileiro S.A. (Brazil)

Aluar Aluminio Argentino

Aluar Aluminio Argentino is the only aluminium smelter in Argentina and one of the largest in South America.

Aluar is a company with national capitals managed according to the most demanding international parameters of the industry and in permanent evolution. Since it commenced its operations, it tripled the aluminium production capacity of 140,000 tonnes due to its constant investment plan. Presently, Aluar supplies to the domestic market with approximately 30% of its produced volume, while exporting the other 70% to countries such as USA, Brazil, Japan and Germany, among others.

Most of Aluar's operations are carried out in the Primary Division, with a primary aluminium production capacity of 460,000 tonnes per year at its plant in Puerto Madryn. There are produced plates, ingots, bars, wire rod and aluminium alloys to supply the most diverse industries, construction, automotive, packaging, power transmission lines, among others.

Towards contribution to Argentina's obligations regarding the reduction of gases with potential greenhouse effect (Paris Agreement, Dec2015 approved by Law 27270), at Aluar the following measures, to contribute to global efforts and aimed at minimizing the effects of climate change:

  • Produce liquid aluminium with Pre-baked technology in electrolysis, with closed electrolytic cells that maximize the use of energy.
  • Control the occurrence of "anodic effect" in the electrolysis tanks, through an automatic monitoring system that actively reduces the occurrence of the said phenomenon, avoiding the production of CF4 (carbon tetrafluoride).
  • Prioritize the generation of energy through combined cycles, re-using the combustion gases emitted by gas turbines to power steam turbines. Consequently, part of the free CO2 emission into the atmosphere is avoided.

Companhia Brasileira de Aluminio

Companhia Brasileira de Aluminio (CBA) is the largest aluminium producer in Brazil having a total annual production of around 480,000 tonnes.

CBA produce aluminium for countless applications, in different forms. Raw, refined or moulded ore and the constant investment in improved processes and cutting-edge technology ensures the quality of CBA’s primary products.

The Latin America’s largest primary aluminium producer produces ingots for remelting, to be used as raw material for the casting, lamination and de-oxidation industries.

CBA ingots are obtained from solidifying aluminium in permanent moulds, known as shells, under controlled refrigeration.

The main products are:

  • P1020 with 99.7% aluminium (0.1% of silicon and 0.2% of iron, as a maximum).
  • P1010 with 99.8% aluminium (0.1% of silicon and 0.1% of iron, as a maximum).
  • Aluminium-silicon alloys for manufacturing wheels.

Billets made by CBA have a better surface finish and a finer, more uniform internal structure than conventional ones as is uses the Wagstaff AirSlip® air-casting technique, with degassing, filtering and grain refining treatments.

Albras Alumínio Brasileiro S.A.

Albras Alumínio Brasileiro S.A. is the second-largest aluminium producer in Brazil having a total annual production capacity of around 460,000 tonnes.

The high purity aluminium that is produced at Barcarena supplies demanding markets in and outside Brazil since 1985. Hydro is the company's main shareholder, with 51% of the shares in this joint venture. The other shareholder is NAAC - Nippon Amazon Aluminum Co. Ltd., formed by a consortium of Japanese companies, trading companies, consumers and manufacturers of aluminium products.

Albras is famous for its production of:

  • High purity aluminium
  • Foundry Alloys

High-purity Aluminium is produced for electronics and advanced technologies sector. The company offer the highest quality standards in close cooperation with customers and also offers made-to-measure solutions to fit individual requirements.

Primary Foundry Alloy (PFA) is a product created especially for the automotive industry and developed from the primary metal P0610, with the addition of four elements: silicon, magnesium, strontium and titanium. The P0610 and P1015 have greater purity, ideal to serve customers seeking innovative solutions.

In addition to the liquid metal and aluminium ingots in P1020 alloy, Albras has recently started production of PFA, P0610, P1015 and bus bars ingots.
