Primary aluminium production in East & Central Europe grows marginally Q-o-Q to 1.043MT in Q4 2020

Primary aluminium production in East & Central Europe rebounded to 352,000 tonnes in December 2020, found the International Aluminium Institute. In November 2020, the output stood at 340,000 tonnes, down by 11,000 tonnes or 0.57 per cent from 351,000 tonnes in October. This brings primary aluminium production in East & Central Europe during the December quarter to 1.043 million tonnes, an increase of only 0.68 per cent quarter-on-quarter from 1.036 million tonnes. However, over the year, it declined by 1.42 per cent from 1.058 million tonnes.

On a year-on-year basis, East & Central Europe’s primary aluminium production in December 2020 stood down by 5,000 tonnes or 1.40 per cent from 357,000 tonnes.

East & Central Europe’s total production in 2020 amounted to 4.153 million tonnes, almost flat compared to 4.157 million tonnes a year ago.

In West Europe, primary aluminium production increased as well on a month-on-month basis by 9,000 tonnes or 3.31 per cent to 281,000 tonnes in December 2020. In November, the output came in at 272,000 tonnes, declining by 8,000 tonnes or 2.86 per cent from 280,000 tonnes in October. Hence, the total production in West Europe in Q4 2020 came in at 833,000 tonnes, up 2,000 tonnes from 831,000 tonnes in the September quarter. On a year-on-year calculation, the production stood 3.36 per cent lower than 862,000 tonnes.

In West Europe, primary aluminium production in December 2020 decreased 4.42 per cent over the year from 294,000 tonnes.

In the entire year of 2020, West Europe churned out 3.333 million tonnes of primary aluminium - 3.36 per cent less than 3.449 million tonnes in 2019.
