World alumina production grows 2.6% year-on-year to 11.366 million tonnes in August 2020: IAI

According to the latest data released by the International Aluminium Institute, world alumina production in August 2020 stood flat at 11.366 million tonnes, following a hike of 3.1 per cent from 11.029 million tonnes in June to 11.367 tonnes in July 2020. On a year-on-year basis, the output in August increased by 2.6 per cent from 11.079 million tonnes, unlike the previous month when world alumina production saw a mere decline of 0.5 per cent over the year.

The world’s total alumina production in the first eight months of 2020 stood at 88.831 million tonnes, registering an increase of 1 per cent from 88.095 million tonnes during the same period last year.

China, being the highest global alumina producer, churned out 5.910 million tonnes in August, the same as that of July 2020 but slightly down from 5.919 million tonnes during the corresponding period of the previous year.

China’s total alumina production during January-August stood at 45.733 million tonnes, 4.42 per cent lesser than 47.847 million tonnes year-on-year.

In Oceania, alumina production in August came in at 1.795 million tonnes, growing by 1.36 per cent month-on-month from 1.771 million tonnes and 9.45 per cent year-on-year from 1.640 million tonnes.

Global Aluminium Expo 2020

In Africa and Asia (ex-China), alumina production in August 2020 was 1.052 million tonnes, down by 3.5 per cent from 1.090 million tonnes in July but up from 830,000 tonnes in August 2019.
