India’s aluminium scrap imports from US continue to grow by 70% in July 2020

According to the latest data shared by the US Geological Survey, India imported 21,700 tonnes of aluminium scrap from the United States in July 2020 versus 12,800 tonnes in June. This means India secured 8,900 tonnes or 69.53 per cent more scrap in July than the previous month. The USGS data found that India’s aluminium scrap imports from the United States have been increasing month-on-month since June. From 4,190 tonnes in May, India’s aluminium scrap imports in June increased by 8,610 tonnes or 205 per cent to stand at 12,800 tonnes. However, the imports in May stood down from 10,400 tonnes in April 2020.

On a year-on-year basis, India’s aluminium scrap imports from the US remained almost flat in July 2020 compared to 21,400 tonnes during the same period last year.

In the first seven months of the year (January-July), India’s aluminium scrap imports from the US totalled 145,000 tonnes, down by 5,000 tonnes or 3.33 per cent from 150,000 tonnes during the corresponding period of a year ago.

The United States total aluminium scrap exports during July 2020 came in at 158,000 tonnes, higher by 8,000 tonnes or 5.33 per cent month-on-month than 150,000 tonnes. On a year-on-year calculation, the exports stood higher by 6,000 tonnes or 4 per cent than 152,000 tonnes.

Global Aluminium Expo 2020

During January-July, the United States’ aluminium scrap exports totalled 1.01 million tonnes, down by 8.18 per cent from 1.10 million tonnes during the same period last year.
