Alumina production in North America grows by 3% M-o-M in August, while in South America shrinks by 2%

Alumina production in North America continued to grow in August 2020, according to the latest data revealed by the International Aluminium Institute. From 231,000 tonnes in July, alumina output in North America increased by 7,000 tonnes or 3.03 per cent to stand at 238,000 tonnes in August. The output in July grew by 8,000 tonnes or 3.6 per cent from 223,000 tonnes in June. In May, North America produced 210,000 tonnes of alumina, meaning June saw a rise of 13,000 tonnes or 6.19 per cent in the output.

However, on a year-on-year basis, North America’s alumina output in August decreased by 8.11 per cent from 259,000 tonnes.

In the first eight months, alumina production in North America totalled 1.79 million tonnes, down by 7.73 per cent year-on-year from 1.94 million tonnes.

In South America, on the other hand, alumina production stood down in August by 1.66 per cent month-on-month to 946,000 tonnes. In July, the output was 962,000 tonnes shrinking by 1.64 per cent from 978,000 tonnes in June. In May, South America churned out 1.02 million tonnes, meaning alumina output in June decreased by 4.12 per cent.

On a year-on-year calculation, alumina production in South America contracted by 9.9 per cent from 1.05 million tonnes.

South America’s total alumina production in the first eight months of the year amounted to 8 million tonnes, up by 17.3 per cent from 6.82 million tonnes during the same period last year.
