JW Aluminium to close its St. Louis aluminium foil facility by this mid-year

JW Aluminium, the US-based leading producer of flat-rolled aluminium products, announced on its website early last week that it plans to close its foil plant in St. Louis, Missouri, on May 30, 2020.

China’s aluminium semis exports in large and increasing volumes have been held responsible for the closure of the plant, which is likely to affect about 190 employees. JW Aluminium claims that Chinese exports have not only disrupted the markets in the United States but also the world.

"This outcome is one we all worked diligently to prevent. However, even with multiple tariffs and duties now in place, it hasn't been enough to overcome the devastating effects of China's market-distorting behaviour," said Lee McCarter, JW Aluminium's chief executive, in a statement.

JW Aluminium had acquired the St. Louis facility in 2004 when China’s foil exports to the US were less than one per cent of the total aluminium market.

Mr. McCarter also said, "We understand the impact this will have on our teammates and their families. We will support all of our teammates through this difficult time and are working to provide the best possible result under these unfortunate circumstances.”

He added, “The decision about St. Louis is a difficult one. Strategically, it is an important step for JW Aluminium to maintain a healthy and robust US manufacturing presence in the decades to come. JW Aluminium will continue to be a leading supplier of American-made flat-rolled aluminium products.”
